Did You Know…
the first pizzas were baked in ancient Greece? They didn’t quite look like today’s pizzas, but were more like flatbreads topped with various ingredients. They were called plakountos, which means "flat bread with things on top." In Italy, pizza was made later and had a shape similar to today’s, but was served without toppings and was considered food for the poor. It wasn’t until Spanish explorer Francisco Pizzaro and his crew, driven by hunger, tried tomatoes and added them to pizza, that modern pizza as we know it today was born. The first pizza was Margherita, named in honor of the queen who loved to sample the food of the poor. After refining the baking technique, this treat spread worldwide and has become one of the most beloved foods for many of us.
